A Night of Purpose:  Fight Against Trafficking and Exploitation

September 17, 2025 — The Men of Bentwater (MOB) hosted an impactful evening focused on human trafficking awareness and prevention, welcoming Our Rescue CEO Derek Benner to the community for an eye-opening presentation on one of society's most pressing issues.

An Urgent Message from the Frontlines

Derek Benner, CEO of Our Rescue (formerly Operation Underground Railroad), delivered a compelling presentation that challenged attendees to reconsider their assumptions about where and how human trafficking occurs. "This isn't just happening overseas," Benner emphasized. "It's happening in our communities, along our highways, and increasingly through digital platforms that target our children."

Benner outlined Our Rescue's strategic shift toward domestic operations, with particular focus on partnerships with local law enforcement agencies across Texas and the nation. The organization, which has supported over 1,000 operations since its founding in 2013, is now laser-focused on combating trafficking and child exploitation in American communities through law enforcement collaboration, prevention education, and survivor aftercare.

Meet Nibble: A Hero on Four Legs

One of the evening's most memorable moments came when Officer Webb of Texas City PD, an Electronic Storage Device (ESD) K9 handler, demonstrated the remarkable capabilities of her K9 partner, Nibble. The audience watched in amazement as the highly trained detection dog demonstrated how these specialized canines can locate hidden electronic devices—often the key evidence in trafficking and child exploitation cases.

"These K9 teams are game-changers," Benner explained. "They can find evidence in minutes that would take human investigators hours or days to locate. In many cases, they're the difference between a predator going free and a successful prosecution."

Officer Webb shared real-world examples of how Nibble's work has directly led to arrests and the rescue of victims, bringing the abstract concept of trafficking investigations into sharp, tangible focus for the MOB membership.

A Community Responds

The response from Bentwater's membership was immediate and generous. Inspired by the evening's presentation and moved by the urgent need for resources, members pledged support to fund an Electronic Storage Device K9—a commitment that will directly enable law enforcement to conduct more effective investigations and rescue operations.

"The level of engagement we experienced at Bentwater was extraordinary," said Ashley Deaver, Major Gifts Officer with Our Rescue's Advancement team. "These men and women didn't just listen—they asked thoughtful questions, engaged with the hard realities of trafficking, and immediately looked for ways to make a tangible difference. That's the kind of community leadership that changes lives."
